How to Rotate a PDF That's Sideways or Upside Down
If a whole PDF is facing the wrong way, open the rotate tool, choose 90, 180 or 270 degrees and download name-rotated.pdf. It changes each page's orientation marker instead of re-rendering the content, so text and scans stay as they were.
When rotation is the right fix
A scanner or phone scanning app saved a portrait document as landscape. The page is perfectly readable once turned, and rescanning is a waste of time. The same applies when someone sends a PDF that is upside down but otherwise intact.
If you notice the orientation is wrong before printing, projecting or uploading, fix it first. This tool is designed for documents where every page has the same problem; a single stray page needs a different workflow.
- A scanner saved portrait pages as landscape.
- A received PDF is upside down.
- You spot the wrong orientation before printing.
- A phone scanning app exported the wrong way.
How to rotate without doing it twice
Read the text direction on the page first and decide whether it needs clockwise or counter-clockwise rotation. Rotation is cumulative: 90 followed by another 90 becomes 180. If you overshoot, rotate 270 to undo a 90 turn, or 180 again to undo a 180 turn, or upload the original and start over. The tool writes a new file and leaves the original untouched.
It rotates the whole document, not selected pages. Because it only changes orientation, it will not sharpen a blurry scan or straighten a page that was fed in at a slight angle. Encrypted PDFs cannot be opened, and multiple files download one by one rather than as a ZIP. Pages that already carry a rotation flag may still print in the old direction with some drivers, so check the result in a viewer before printing.
- Decide clockwise or counter-clockwise before the first click.
- Overshot? Rotate the other way or re-upload the original.
- One bad page: extract it, rotate it, merge it back.
- Before printing, check that the viewer and printer respect page orientation.
When not to rotate
If only one page is sideways, rotating the whole file turns the good pages too. Extract that page, rotate it, then merge it back. If the paper went in at a slight angle rather than a multiple of 90 degrees, rotation cannot fix it; you need deskewing or a rescan.
Rotation will not sharpen a blurry scan, remove black edges or correct perspective — use an image tool for that. It does not compress the file either. Processing happens in the browser, and the PDF is not uploaded.
- One wrong page: extract, rotate, merge.
- Slight skew: deskew or rescan.
- Sharper output: rotation cannot help.
- Smaller file: use a compression tool.
FAQ
Does rotating a PDF reduce quality or increase the file size?
No content is re-rendered. The tool adds 90, 180 or 270 degrees to each page's existing rotation, so text, vector art and scans stay as they are, and the file size barely changes. It also will not make a blurry scan sharper.
How do I rotate just one page of a PDF?
The tool rotates the whole document. Extract that page with Extract Pages, rotate it on its own, then merge it back. Merging drops bookmarks and forms, so use a desktop PDF editor if those matter.
I rotated the wrong way. How do I undo it?
Rotation is cumulative: 90 plus 90 is 180. Rotate 270 to undo a 90 turn, or 180 again to undo a 180 turn, or upload the original file and run it again. Your original file is never modified.
