Thousands Separator Formatter: Writing 1234567 as 1,234,567

Enter 1234567.89 and you get 1,234,567.89 plus the three locale renderings. When checking a report, filling an invoice, or confirming an amount with a colleague, agreeing on one written form beats reading digits aloud.

When separators are worth adding

Long numbers in reports, invoices, and contract annexes are hard to size up at a glance without separators. 1234567 and 1,234,567 are the same value, but the second one is immediately readable as just over 1.2 million, and a misplaced digit is much easier to spot.

Across regions the conventions also diverge: English and Chinese both group in threes, but the decimal mark and currency symbol placement can differ. Seeing the three renderings side by side avoids the classic confusion over whether a comma is a thousands separator or a decimal point.

How to format without losing accuracy

The input can contain commas, spaces, and a sign, and they are cleaned up before formatting, so 1,234,567.89 copied from a spreadsheet works directly. A negative sign is preserved, and decimals are kept to at most three places with the rest rounded, so round to two yourself if that is what you need.

Above 2^53, roughly nine quadrillion, JavaScript numbers lose precision and the trailing digits can turn into zeros. For bookkeeping that has to be exact to the cent, do not use this; handle the value as a string in a spreadsheet or an accounting system instead.

Where it stops, and what to use instead

The output is plain text: no currency symbol, no unit, and no control over how many decimal places are shown. For a form like a currency symbol followed by 1,234,567.89, or a fixed two decimals, set a cell format in a spreadsheet or configure it in your system.

Regional variants such as Indian grouping (12,34,567) or European dot separators (1.234.567,89) are not supported. For cross-border work, follow the receiving system's format, and generate it with a custom cell format or Intl.NumberFormat in code for reliability.

FAQ

Do the three formats differ?

For plain numbers they are identical: three digits and a comma. The locales diverge on currency symbols, units, and dates, so the three lines are mainly for checking and pasting.

Are decimals truncated?

Up to three decimals are kept and the rest is rounded. If you need exactly two, round before or after this step, for example by setting a number format in a spreadsheet.

Do very large numbers lose precision?

Integers above 2^53 lose precision in JavaScript, so verify with string handling or split the figure into parts rather than relying on this for bookkeeping.
