Kilometres to Miles for Races and Road Trips
Kilometres to miles means dividing by 1.609344, or multiplying by 0.6213711922. The tool uses the international mile fixed by the 1959 agreement, not the 0.62 shortcut.
Races, pace and rentals
A 10K is 10 × 0.6213711922 ≈ 6.213712 miles. A marathon of 42.195 km is about 26.2188 miles, which is why it is called 26.2 abroad, and a half of 21.0975 km is about 13.1094 miles. These are the numbers race entries use.
Race entries abroad, running apps set to miles and US car rentals all use the same conversion. Five kilometres is about 3.1069 miles, and 10 miles is about 16.09 km; remembering that a mile is a little over 1.6 km keeps estimates close.

1.609344 and the international mile
The 1959 yard and pound agreement fixed 1 yard at 0.9144 m, so 1 mile = 1,760 yards = 1,609.344 m, or 1.609344 km. The tool uses 1 ÷ 1.609344 = 0.6213711922, keeps six decimals below 1,000 and two at or above it.
A mile is a length defined from the yard, not a round multiple of the metre. The nautical mile is a different unit at 1.852 km, used at sea and in aviation, and must not be mixed with the statute mile converted here.
- 1 mile = 1.609344 km, by definition
- A nautical mile is 1.852 km, a different unit
- Six decimals below 1,000, two above
The limits around pace and distance
The tool converts distance, not pace. A 9:00/mi pace is about 5:35/km, and you have to convert before comparing; treating 9:00 per mile as 9:00 per kilometre makes the difference look far larger than it is.
Miles remain the road unit in the US and UK, while most of the world uses kilometres. Unify units before comparing odometers or fuel economy, and note that MPG and L/100km run in opposite directions, so the numbers are not directly comparable.
- Convert pace to per-kilometre or per-mile first
- Imperial and metric road distances are not comparable
- MPG and L/100km are different measures
FAQ
How many miles is a kilometre?
One international mile is exactly 1.609344 km under the 1959 agreement, so 1 km = 0.6213711922 miles. This tool uses that standard value rather than the 0.62 people use for mental arithmetic.
How many miles is a 42.195 km marathon?
42.195 × 0.6213711922 ≈ 26.2188 miles, which is why a marathon is called 26.2 miles abroad. A half marathon of 21.0975 km is about 13.1094 miles, useful when your watch is set to the other unit.
Is a mile the same as a nautical mile?
No. A statute mile is 1.609344 km on land, while a nautical mile is 1.852 km and is used at sea and in aviation. They differ by about 15%, so the two cannot be used interchangeably.
