GB to MB: 1024 or 1000?

In the binary convention, 1 GB is 1,024 MB. The tool uses 1,024, so 2 GB shows 2,048 MB; if a seller means the decimal GB, the same figure is only 1,000 MB, a 2.4% difference.

Data plans, cloud storage and installs

A 2 GB data plan is enforced in MB, so it is 2,048 MB; after an 800 MB film, 1,248 MB remain. A 100 GB cloud drive is 102,400 MB, and 5,000 photos at 4 MB each use about 20,000 MB, less than a fifth of the space.

A 50 GB game may need extra room to unpack, so its disk footprint is larger than the download. A 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB in Windows, not because it shrank but because the maker counts in decimal and the system in binary.

Base 1024 and the two standards

The tool uses 1 GB = 1,024 MB, the convention Windows uses for file sizes. Strictly, the binary units are GiB and MiB, while GB and MB are decimal, but software and packaging mix them freely, so check which one a label means.

The conversion is a multiplication only; it ignores transfer overhead, cluster size and compression. Below 1,000 it keeps six decimals with trailing zeros removed, at 1,000 or more two decimals, and GB values may be fractional, so 0.5 GB is 512 MB.

Label capacity versus usable space

Drives, USB sticks and SD cards are labelled in decimal: 1 TB is 1000⁴ bytes, which the system shows as about 931 GiB. The gap grows with capacity: 4 TB shows about 3.64 TB and 8 TB about 7.28 TB.

Usable space is further reduced by the file system, preinstalled software and recovery partitions. A 128 GB phone may offer only about 100 GB to the user. The tool converts units only; it does not predict free space or playback time.

FAQ

Is 1 GB 1024 MB or 1000 MB?

Both conventions exist. Windows and this tool use 1024, so 1 GB = 1024 MB; drive manufacturers label in decimal, so their 1 GB = 1000 MB. Strictly, the 1024-based units are GiB and MiB, which is why a 1 TB drive shows up as 931 GB.

How long will 2 GB of data last for video?

This tool only converts units, it doesn't estimate playback time. Bitrates differ so much between platforms and resolutions that 2 GB might be half an hour or a few hours. Check the data-usage hint in the app or your current usage in settings.

Why does a new drive show less capacity?

Because the label and the display use different bases. The maker counts 1 GB as 1000 MB and the system as 1024 MB, so a 1 TB drive shows about 931 GB. The file system and reserved partitions reduce usable space further; it is not a defect.
