Unit converter

Includes Chinese 斤/两/亩 and US gallons — not just metric.

→
How it's calculated

"斤" is 500 g (market catty) and "两" is 50 g; gallons are US; data units use base 1024 (KiB), unlike the base-1000 figures drive makers quote — which is exactly why "a 1TB drive shows only 931GB".

When to use it

  • You are reading a US or UK recipe, manual or spec sheet with inches, feet, miles, gallons or pounds and need centimetres, kilometres, litres or kilograms — or Fahrenheit converted to Celsius.
  • A property listing quotes mu, a market quotes jin or liang, or a data plan quotes GB/TB, and you want the exact square metres, grams or bytes.

When not to

  • You need trade-settlement accuracy or precious-metal weights: jin and liang are Chinese market units, bullion uses troy ounces (31.1035 g) and medicines use fluid ounces, while this tool's ounce is the avoirdupois ounce (28.3495 g).
  • You need data above TB, or strict KiB/MiB notation: this tool stops at TB and keeps 1024-based KB/GB labels, not SI kB (1000).
Limits and privacy

Everything is converted in the browser; input is never uploaded or stored and clears on refresh. Limits: jin = 500 g, liang = 50 g and mu = 666.67 m² — Japan's jin is 600 g and the imperial gallon is 4.546 L; data uses 1024 and stops at TB; temperature covers Celsius, Fahrenheit and kelvin only; thousands separators are not supported.

Frequently asked

Why does a 1 TB drive show only 931 GB?

Drive makers use decimal units: 1 TB = 1,000,000,000,000 bytes. Windows uses 1024-based units: 1 GB = 1024³ = 1,073,741,824 bytes. 1,000,000,000,000 ÷ 1,073,741,824 ≈ 931.32, so it displays 931 GB. macOS has shown decimal units since 10.6, so the same drive reads 1 TB there. Strictly, the 1024-based units should be written KiB / MiB / GiB; this tool keeps KB / GB / TB to match Windows. Nothing is being hidden — the two sides just count in different bases.

How do Chinese jin, liang and mu convert?

1 market jin = 500 g (the 1959 reform replaced 16 liang per jin with 10), 1 market liang = 50 g, so 1 jin = 10 liang = 0.5 kg. 1 mu = 666.67 m² = 60 square zhang, and 15 mu = 1 hectare. Japan also has a 斤, but it is 600 g; Taiwan's 台斤 is 600 g as well. Do not apply 500 g when reading a Japanese recipe or buying at a Taiwanese market.

How big is the difference between US and imperial gallons?

1 US gallon = 3.785411784 L; 1 imperial gallon = 4.54609 L — about 20% larger. The US and parts of Latin America use US gallons; the UK and some Canadian contexts use imperial. This tool's “gallon (US)” is US only: for gal (imp) or UK gallon, multiply by 1.20095 to get US gallons first.
