Line-by-Line Text Diff

Compare two blocks of text line by line: unchanged lines are kept as they are, while differing lines are prefixed with a minus or a plus. Lines are aligned by index with no smart matching, so it suits config files, subtitles and copy edits.

How to use
  • Paste the original and the revised version so the two texts line up row by row.
  • In the output, lines starting with two spaces are unchanged, a minus marks only-in-original and a plus marks only-in-revised.
  • For config files, make sure both use the same line endings, or whole blocks will show as changed.

FAQ

Why does one inserted line change everything after it?

Lines are compared by index, without longest-common-subsequence matching. Insert one line and every following line shifts by one, so they all read as changed. That is expected for a simple diff.

Can it ignore case or whitespace?

No. Only an exact match counts, so one trailing space marks a line as different. Trim trailing spaces before pasting.

What if the line counts differ?

Extra lines are marked wholly as deleted or added and no error is raised. Balancing the line counts first makes the result easier to read.
