Quote Each Line: Wrapping Subtitles, Dialogue, and Citations in Corner Brackets

Adding brackets to each line of dialogue by hand is slow. Paste the lines and every non-empty one gets wrapped, while blank lines stay blank, so the result drops straight into subtitles or a document.

When each line needs its own brackets

In subtitles and scripts, each line of dialogue usually gets its own quotes so it can be separated from the speaker. Organising interview quotes works the same way: one sentence per line, marked out so it can be cited later. Doing fifty of them by hand is slow and invites inconsistency.

Another case is turning a conversation into a list: one line per utterance, and brackets make it visually clear which line is quoted and which is your own note. A uniform marker also survives copy-paste into a document that would otherwise convert straight quotes into curly ones.

How to wrap without mistakes

Each non-empty line gets a bracket at both ends; blank lines are left empty, so paragraph breaks survive. The brackets are Japanese corner brackets, not English double quotes, and they are what Chinese and Japanese typesetting uses for quotations and dialogue. For English quotes, replace both characters after copying.

Lines that already carry brackets get wrapped twice, so a quoted line becomes double-bracketed. Check the source before running this in bulk, or strip the extra layer afterwards. Existing quotes inside a line can also end up unbalanced, so read through the result.

Where it stops, and what to use instead

It adds one layer of brackets. There is no escaping, no handling of nested quotations, and no distinction between dialogue and narration. Scripts and academic citations have their own conventions for quote levels, and those need line-by-line handling rather than a bulk pass.

It also cannot wrap only selected lines, add book-title marks or square brackets, or place the brackets anywhere but at both ends. For a different symbol or position, multi-cursor editing or a regex insert in your editor is more flexible.

FAQ

Does it add straight English quotes?

No, it adds Japanese corner brackets, which mark quotations and dialogue in Chinese and Japanese typesetting. If you need English double quotes, replace both bracket characters with a standard double quote after copying.

What if a line already has brackets?

It gets wrapped again, giving a double-bracketed line. Check the source for existing brackets before running it in bulk, or strip the extra layer afterwards so the document does not end up with doubled brackets.

Can it add book-title marks or square brackets instead?

No. The tool always adds corner brackets and cannot switch to other marks. For another symbol, use multi-cursor editing or a regex replace in your editor to insert the character at the start and end of each line.
