Lines to One Line: Joining Short Lines into a Paragraph

Short lines copied from a chat window or a spreadsheet arrive one per line. Turning them into a single paragraph is more reliable with a merge than with manual deletion.

When you actually need it

Chat messages that should become one explanation, a column of short phrases that needs to read as a sentence, and fragments extracted from a PDF that belong in a paragraph all call for joining lines. Multi-line headings are another common case.

Preparing text for publication fits too. Some platforms limit the number of lines, and some input boxes treat a newline as a submit, so flattening the text first avoids a truncated or prematurely sent message.

How it behaves

A line break, together with the whitespace around it, becomes a single space; runs of spaces are then collapsed and the ends trimmed. English sentences join correctly. Chinese sentences end up with a space between them that Chinese does not normally use, so remove it by hand or with a replace.

Do not use it on content whose structure matters: code, postal addresses, poetry, lists, and spreadsheet columns cannot be restored once merged, because indentation and line division are gone. Blank lines become a single space as well, so paragraph boundaries disappear. Keep the original.

Alternatives and the reverse operation

To join sentences with commas, merge first and then replace the spaces between sentences with a comma. To keep paragraphs and only remove extra blank lines, delete empty lines instead. To drop line breaks without inserting spaces, replace the newline character with nothing in an editor.

The reverse need, splitting a paragraph into lines, is what the sentence splitter does. The two are often used together: split into one sentence per line for editing, then merge back into a paragraph. Repeat the round trip until nothing else needs fixing.

FAQ

Why is there now a space between my Chinese sentences?

Each line break was replaced with a space. English needs that space and Chinese does not, so delete them afterwards or use find-and-replace to remove the spaces between sentences.

Is the line break turned into a space or removed?

It becomes a space, and surrounding whitespace is collapsed into the same one, which keeps English words from running together. If you want the break gone with no space, use a regex replace instead.

Does merging lose any text?

No. All the words are kept; only the whitespace between lines is replaced. What is lost is the structure the line breaks carried, so code, addresses, and lists cannot be reconstructed.
