Title Case Converter: What It Gets Right, What You Fix

A heading that arrived in block capitals or with random capitalisation looks tidy once every word starts with a capital. The tool works on characters, though, not on grammar.

When you actually need it

Subheadings, chapter names, slide titles, and button labels are the everyday cases. If one section says How to Start and the next says How To Start, the inconsistency is visible; converting both gives one style. English blog subheadings and feature names usually follow the same pattern.

The other use is rescuing a block-capital heading pasted from somewhere else. Title case reads more easily than all caps, especially in long lines where readers otherwise work out word boundaries letter by letter. Only the case of the letters changes; nothing is reordered.

How it behaves, and where to correct it

A word here means a run of letters and digits, so state-of-the-art is treated as one token: the first letter is capitalised and everything after it is lowercased. Words with an apostrophe behave the same way. If you want each part of a hyphenated compound capitalised, fix it by hand.

Articles, prepositions, and conjunctions are capitalised too. Style guides such as Chicago keep a, an, the, of, in, and and short in titles, but this tool does not know parts of speech, so The, Of, and And all come out capitalised. Acronyms suffer as well: NASA becomes Nasa, PDF becomes Pdf, and iPhone becomes Iphone.

Alternatives and when to skip it

If a heading has to follow a particular style guide, no single click will get you there. Use this as a first pass, then fix the short words, acronyms, and brand names by hand; in a heading of ten words that takes a minute.

For display only, CSS text-transform: capitalize changes the appearance and leaves the data alone. What you should not put through it is code, file names, or identifiers: run myVariableName or user_id through and you get something that is neither camelCase nor snake_case, just text to clean up.

FAQ

Why were of, the, and and capitalised?

The tool capitalises the first letter of every token and does not identify parts of speech. Style guides keep short words lowercase in titles, so change those back by hand.

Why did NASA become Nasa?

Each word is lowercased and then its first letter is capitalised, which flattens acronyms into Nasa or Pdf. Restore acronyms and brand names manually after converting.

Can I use the output as a web page title?

As a first draft, yes, but proofread short words, acronyms, and brand names. If you only need the look, CSS capitalize is safer because it never changes the stored text.
