Remove Duplicate Lines: Why Some Repeats Survive

A list copied from a spreadsheet or a chat often repeats the same entry several times. Deduplication keeps the first occurrence and removes the rest, without editing any line.

When you actually need it

Merging lists is the usual trigger. Three exports each carry an email or phone column, and after pasting them together the overlap is large; only after deduplication do you see the real count. Keywords, tags, URLs, and product codes behave the same way.

Cleaning exported data is the other case. A log repeats the same event, or a chat thread forwards the same message, and what remains after deduplication is the set of distinct entries. Checking the volume of duplicates first is also a quick read on data quality.

How to get the result you expect

Comparison works on whole lines, character by character, and it is case-sensitive. A leading or trailing space, a full-width space in the middle, or a different punctuation mark makes a line distinct. When a look-alike survives, it is almost always one of these invisible differences.

The first occurrence is the one kept, so the original order matters. Sorting before deduplicating means the surviving copy is the first one in sorted order. Trim leading and trailing spaces first, deduplicate second, sort last if you need to. Blank lines follow the same rule, so several of them collapse into one.

Alternatives and cautions

For case-insensitive deduplication, lowercase everything first, accepting that this rewrites the original values. Near-duplicates such as Acme and Acme Inc., phone numbers with different prefixes, or the same address written two ways are not merged here; that needs fuzzy matching or a script.

With large data, or data already in a spreadsheet, use Remove Duplicates in Excel, SELECT DISTINCT in a database, or sort followed by uniq on the command line. Keep a copy of the original, because removed lines leave no trace of what was dropped.

FAQ

Why was a line that looks identical not removed?

Comparison is character by character, so a leading or trailing space, a full-width space, or a different punctuation mark makes it a different line. Trim the edges first and deduplicate again.

Which copy of a duplicate is kept?

The first occurrence in the current order, and later identical lines are removed. If you sorted first, the survivor is the first one in sorted order rather than the first in your source file.

Can it ignore case when deduplicating?

No, it is case-sensitive, so React and react count as two lines. Lowercase everything before deduplicating if you need that, and keep a backup because the original casing is lost.
