Square Metres to Square Feet, and Floor-Area Basis
Area conversion squares the length factor: 1 foot is 0.3048 m, so 1 ft² = 0.09290304 m² and 1 m² = 10.76391042 ft². The tool applies that factor directly and leaves the floor-area basis to you.

Listings and rental ads abroad
A US rental ad quoting 1,000 sq ft is about 92.9 m², and 800 sq ft is about 74.3 m². Convert before comparing with the sizes you know, or 1,000 square feet easily reads as 100 square metres in your head.
Comparing prices across countries is trickier because the basis differs: US listings usually quote interior living area, Chinese figures often include shared space, and Japan uses wall-centre or exclusive area. A 100 m² gross figure may be only 75–80 m² usable, so matching it to 1,076 ft² overstates the space.

10.76391042 and the square
One foot is 0.3048 m, so one square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m², and one square metre is 1 ÷ 0.09290304 = 10.76391042 ft². That follows exactly from the definition of the foot rather than an average of measurements.
The tool multiplies by 10.76391042, keeps six decimals below 1,000 with trailing zeros removed, and two at or above 1,000. Do not reuse the length factor 3.2808: area squares it, and multiplying by 3.28 alone undercounts by a factor of about 3.28.
- 1 m² = 10.76391042 ft²
- The area factor is the length factor squared
- Six decimals below 1,000, two above
Floor-area basis is the bigger trap
A US apartment's square footage is normally usable interior area, excluding wall thickness and shared space. China's gross floor area includes shared circulation, lifts and stairwells, and Japan distinguishes exclusive area from wall-centre area. The three are not directly comparable.
The tool converts units only; it does not judge shared-space ratios, balconies, ceiling height or lofts. To compare prices, normalise to usable interior area, or compare price per square metre and total price alongside location, age and taxes.
- US interior area versus Chinese gross area
- Japan separates exclusive and wall-centre area
- Normalise the basis before comparing prices
FAQ
How many square feet are in a square metre?
One foot is 0.3048 m, so one square foot is 0.3048² = 0.09290304 m², and one square metre is 10.76391042 ft². That follows exactly from the international definition of the foot, not an average measurement.
What is 100 m² in square feet?
100 × 10.76391042 ≈ 1076.39 ft². Watch the basis, though: US listings usually quote interior living area, while Chinese figures often include shared space, so the numbers are not directly comparable even after conversion.
Why not just multiply by 3.28?
3.28 is the length factor for metres to feet, and area squares it: 3.2808² ≈ 10.7639. Multiplying 100 m² by 3.28 gives 328 ft², roughly a third of the correct 1076 ft², a very large error.
