Random Picker Guide: One Result, Not a Lottery Machine

Deciding where to eat or who speaks first tolerates weak randomness. Anything involving prizes, quotas, or accountability needs an auditable mechanism, not a web page.

Everyday decisions it suits

Lunch, speaking order, picking one of three proposals, assigning a chore: the cost of being wrong is low, and a draw ends the argument while feeling fair. That is the right scope.

It also works for picking a sample from a list, choosing one headline for a quick test, or shuffling names before forming teams. The catch is accepting the result instead of redrawing until you like it.

Clean the input first

One option per line. Blank lines are ignored, but leading and trailing spaces are not normalised for you, so two entries that differ only by a space count as different options. Duplicates double that option's chance, so deduplicate first.

One draw per click, no history, gone on refresh. To pick several people without repeats, remove each winner before drawing again. To keep a record, write it down or use a script.

Boundary: this is not a lottery

This tool uses the browser's ordinary pseudo-random generator, Math.random, not a cryptographic source. That is fine for daily choices, but it is not verifiable, has no seed, no log, and no third-party oversight, so it is unsuitable for prize draws or eligibility decisions.

A formal draw needs a verifiable random source, a frozen snapshot of entrants, a public record of the draw, and witnesses. A front-end page provides none of that. Use it for decisions where the outcome genuinely does not matter.

FAQ

Can the same option win twice in a row?

Yes. Each draw is independent and no history is kept, so repeats are normal. If you need several distinct winners, remove each one from the list before the next draw.

Is it suitable for an official draw?

No. It uses ordinary randomness with no audit log, no entrant snapshot, and no witnesses, so the result cannot be reviewed. Use a verifiable random source for anything with stakes.

Can it pick several at once?

No, one result per draw. Draw repeatedly and remove winners, or use a script that produces a non-repeating random sequence. There is no multi-pick mode.
