Separate the Problem from Its First Solution
Added 2026-10-31
Check whether the problem statement is captured by one solution, then widen the options.
My current statement is "we need to build an X". Do: 1) separate the part that is a problem from the part that is already a solution; 2) restate the problem without naming a solution; 3) list at least four directions that do not involve X; 4) judge which is cheapest; 5) if we still choose X, what justification would be sufficient.

How to use
「要做 X」通常只是「问题 + 一个方案」的混合。
Try tweaking it
- Ask what evidence would overturn the judgement.
- Have it argue both sides with three reasons each.
What you should get
- A decision table: assumptions, evidence, counter-evidence
- A next action with an observable signal
Common mistakes
- Asking only "should I?" and getting equally valid answers both ways.
- Never asking for counter-examples, so you only hear support.
How to check the output
- It states what evidence would overturn the conclusion.
- Both sides are argued, with assumptions marked as such.
Where it works
- Good for: splitting a decision into assumptions, evidence and counter-cases, leaving the call to you.
- Watch out: ask what evidence would overturn the judgement, or you will only hear supporting reasons.
