Minimum Viable Learning Path

Work backwards from what you can use next week and cut the rest

I need to use [skill or tool] to finish [specific task] within [timeframe]. Give me a minimum viable learning path: 1) define the lowest acceptable standard for finishing that task; 2) keep only the knowledge required to hit that standard, ordered by dependency; 3) one exercise of 15 minutes or less per item; 4) an explicit not-now list with reasons; 5) a test for when I can stop learning and start doing.
How to use

The stop test is the part everyone skips, and without it the minimum path grows back into a full course.

Good for

  • You have to ship something with a new tool in two weeks and the full tutorial runs dozens of hours
  • You've studied once but never shipped, and you need the knowledge to turn into output fast

Not for

  • The goal is a long-term commitment — a career change, a certification — where skipping fundamentals costs you for months
  • The task leans on tacit experience (negotiation, diagnosis), where compressing it into a checklist creates false confidence

Example

Input
Next week I have to build a sales report with regional totals in Excel. I can type and do basic sums.
What you get
The bar should be written as a report that totals by region automatically and survives a data refresh. Required knowledge collapses to table structure (one-dimensional), pivot tables, and absolute references, each with a 15-minute exercise. The not-now list should name VBA, chart styling, and Power Query; the stop test is changing three source rows and watching the totals update.

Common mistakes

  • Reading minimum as least effort and cutting an upstream dependency, so every later step needs rework
  • Skipping the stop test, then adding the next stage on a roll until the short path is a full course again

Try tweaking it like this

  • Ask for 'a rough version I can ship in two hours, then the iterations after it' when a deadline is already fixed
  • Add 'mark the items whose absence causes rework', which tells you what must not be cut
