Icon Style Consistency Check
Find the icons whose stroke width, corner radius, or visual weight does not match
These are the icons used in my interface: [icon list or screenshot]. Check them for consistency: 1) Is stroke width uniform — how many pixels does it differ by when scaled to the same size; 2) Are corner radii and line caps handled the same way; 3) Is visual weight balanced — which icon looks too heavy or too light at the same size; 4) Are the metaphors consistent, or is one concept drawn two ways; 5) Name the 2–3 that must be redrawn, and give the specs for redrawing (canvas, stroke width, corner radius, negative space). Do not judge whether the icons look good.
How to use
Export everything to the same size before comparing; rescaled screenshots will fool your eye.
Good for
- The icons were collected over several rounds from different sources and the UI looks slightly off without your being able to say why — stroke width, corner radius, and visual weight locate exactly which ones.
- When you need to redraw a few and hand specs to a contractor — that means numbers for canvas size, stroke width, corner radius, and padding.
Not for
- The icons come straight from one official icon library — the library guarantees consistency, and auditing it wastes time.
- You need to judge whether the metaphors are understandable — that takes user testing; a static comparison cannot tell you.
Example
Input
A set of 12 line icons: search, favourite, share, settings, messages, back, plus, minus, delete, edit, upload, more. The strokes look inconsistent in the screenshot
What you get
Scaled to 24px, it reports strokes mixed across 1.5, 2, and 2.5px and names which icons sit in each band; line caps are inconsistent (round on back, square on plus); visual weight is off (the filled favourite star is clearly heavier); one metaphor is used twice (share and upload both draw an upward arrow). The output ends with the two or three that must be redrawn and the spec: 24px canvas, 1.75px stroke, 2px radius, 2px padding.
Common mistakes
- Comparing rescaled screenshots — resampling makes 1.5px and 2px look identical, so every conclusion drawn from it is wrong.
- Asking which icon looks better — aesthetic judgment cannot unify a set; what you need is a quantified difference list.
Try tweaking it like this
- Add 'sort by cost to fix' — a one-line change that unifies everything (normalizing stroke width) outranks redrawing a single icon.
- Replace 'check consistency' with 'assume this set will go to a contractor to be extended to 30 — write the spec first' — moving from fault-finding to standard-setting saves more over time.
