Turning a Group Chat into Action Items
Pull who does what by when out of hundreds of messages
Turn the group chat log below into action items. Requirements: 1) keep only messages with a clear action or conclusion — drop chatter, emoji, and repeated confirmations; 2) output a table: item / owner / due / current status / quoted summary; 3) list unclaimed items in their own section marked 'unassigned'; 4) put contradictory statements in their own section, saying who said what; 5) finish with the three questions that must be answered today. [Paste chat log]
How to use
Post the 'unassigned' and 'contradictions' sections back to the group — faster than chasing each thread one by one.
Good for
- A project channel runs hundreds of messages a day and you need to extract who committed to what, especially the items nobody picked up.
- Cross-time-zone work where the Slack thread ended after the other side logged off; you need a list you can drop into Notion for async confirmation instead of another meeting.
Not for
- The channel is mostly emotional argument or personnel talk — turning it into action items cements things nobody agreed to.
- The conversation must be preserved for legal or compliance — a summary loses context and qualifiers and cannot stand in for the record.
Example
Input
(channel excerpt) A: Can the login copy change today? B: I'll do it this afternoon, but I need design's final copy. C: I sent the final copy last night. B: Didn't see it — where? C: The 21:40 message in here. D: Hold the canary until tracking is done. A: So are we shipping today or not?
What you get
A table with only the messages that carry an action or a decision: copy change / B / this afternoon / waiting on design's final (sent, unconfirmed by B). A separate unassigned section for when tracking will be done, and a conflicts section for C saying it was sent versus B not seeing it. End with the three questions that need an answer today: did B get the copy, who owns tracking, and is the canary delayed.
Common mistakes
- Pasting hundreds of messages without the channel, time window, or project you care about — you get a pile of action items that have nothing to do with you.
- Not liking an empty unassigned row and having the AI put a name in it — that is assigning work the person never agreed to.
Try tweaking it like this
- Add 'Keep only items that @-mention me or that I need to follow up', turning the channel into a personal inbox.
- Add 'Give each action item one line I can post back for confirmation', so you can confirm in the channel instead of another round of DMs.
